Attention, Bluesky users

Here’s a few notices that you probably need to know about my account @beeps.gay.

This is a cross-posting account

I don’t actually use Bluesky. I’m o’er on the fediverse on my personal Mastodon instance, and what you see on Bluesky are automated copies of those posts.

This means that features on the fediverse not supported by Bluesky, including longer posts, larger bios, custom emoji, polls, audio posting, etc. will not show up properly on Bluesky.

Bluesky also doesn't support post editing, so the fediverse version of a post may include information or corrections not present in the Bluesky version.

If these happen, you’ll have to view my profile or posts on the fediverse to see them properly and in full.

I won’t always be able to reply to you

Because I’m only ever using the fediverse side of things, I don’t see replies, follows, favourites or shares that happen on Bluesky.

The cross-posting software tries to compensate for this by sending notifications for replies, but this is pretty unreliable and often misses things. If the notification fails to send for some reason, then I won’t see and will be unable to respond to any replies given.

I can’t follow you unless you also use a cross-poster

Two-way interactions can work, but you must first follow @ap.brid.gy. This does what I’m currently doing, but in reverse, creating an automated copy of your Bluesky profile and posts on the fediverse.

Using the cross-poster effectively makes you a first-class fediverse citizen, and I will be able to follow, reply, favourite and share your posts with no barriers. I recommend it!

I definitely won’t receive DMs

Despite claims of decentralisation, Bluesky’s direct messaging functionality is entirely centralised and proprietary. This means that direct messages cannot be copied to the fediverse and I will never, ever see them.

Da future?

As it stands, my presence on Bluesky is entirely tied into the cross-posting software. I am unable to log in to Bluesky directly.

I currently cannot detach my account from the cross-poster without deleting it, either (though that ability is on the development roadmap), so this state of affairs will last however long it lasts. I probably will detach them at some point, but that’s unlikely to be soon.

I highly encourage you to follow @ap.brid.gy in the meantime, so that you can get the benefits of being on the fediverse without actually needing to create a separate account.
